Emily is based on the Great Northern Railway's (GNR) "Stiriling Single" Class 4-2-2, nicknamed the "Eight-Footer." Designed by Patrick Stirling, all 53 locomotives were built at the GNR's Works at Doncaster between 1870 and 1895. These locomotives were used for Express passenger trains, until they were displaced by the Ivatt Atlantics, with the oldest members being withdrawn in 1899, and the remainder of the class being used in secondary service until 1916. One member of the class survives into preservation, that being the prototype engine, #1, at the National Railway Museum in York.
